A man who shot at a group during a fight in a Santa Fe Springs parking lot was later shot and killed during a confrontation with security guards from a nearby swap meet on Sunday night, July 21.
The fatal shooting didn’t happen at the swap meet but in a parking lot on Mica Street used by vendors and customers, police said.
Investigators believe the fight and earlier shooting were gang-related. Another man, who is 18 years old and from Los Angeles, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, said Officer Emily Armstrong, a spokeswoman for Whittier police, which patrols Santa Fe Springs.
Shortly after 5 p.m., police got a report of a large fight and possible shooting in the 13900 block of Mica, which is near the Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet on Alondra Boulevard.
Because the group fled, it was unclear if anyone was hit by gunfire. Police are still investigating what led the man to open fire.
Security guards from the swap meet were in the surrounding area and confronted the man on Mica, said Armstrong said. A least one guard shot the man, she said.
He died at the scene. A gun was found with him, Armstrong said.
The medical examiner’s office identified the man as Christopher Andres Farias Ortiz, 28, of Hesperia.
Whittier police asked anyone with information about the shooting to call their tip line at 562-567-9299.
